funded by cbs >> it's friday welcome to "cbs this morning," everyone. i'm jeff glor with rebecca jar sis. charlie, gayle and norah are off. there are predictions but little progress in washington with a deadline for the fiscal cliff now just four days away. >> president obama meets later today with congressional leaders in one last effort to make a deal before the deadline. major garrett is at the white house. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, rebecca and jeff. in just a couple of hours at the white house the president meets with all the key congressional leaders, top democrats harry reid and nancy pelosi leading republicans mitch mcconnell and john boehner. no deal can be reached in past without their cooperation. with the meeting comes a glimmer of hope. in the past all the ifisical cliff talks meetings like this have been the least productive of all. whether he meant to or not the senate majority leader may have spoken for a nation exhausted by seemingly endless fiscal cliff negotiations. >> what's going on here? >> reporter: what indeed. president obam

. 16 hours and counting. the fiscal negotiations are coming downright to the last hour. >> cbs reporter danielle nottingham joins us live from d.c. where the house is set to reconvene in just about an hour. good morning. >>> reporter: vice president joe biden is in on the negotiations. mitch mcconnell asked him to help out after talks stalled. with hours to go it's hard to tell if lawmakers will be able to agree to a watered down deal. lawmakers left the capital sunday night without a deal in place. but leaders from both parties expressed their willingness to continue working. >> there's still significant difference between the two sides but negotiations continue. >> he want everyone to know i'm willing to get it done but i need a dance partner. >> reporter: some progress was made sunday when republicans dropped a proposal to slow social security growth but the main sticking point between democrats and republicans continues to be over the threshold of tax increases. president obama campaigned on raising taxes on income over $250,000. while many congressional republicans have pushed back

. live in san francisco, cate caugiran, cbs 5. >>> three members and one family died in a weekend fire in east san jose. a couple and their 4-year-old granddaughter were trapped on the upper floor. firefighters arrived in just minutes but the entire building was already engulfed in flames. >> this fire somehow got a really big head start on us. it burned hot and it burned very fast. it consumed most of the apartment even within a three minute response time for us. >> the two victims had lived in the complex for about 20 years. their granddaughter also died. and another family member was reported to be in intensive care. two other people suffered smoke inhalation including a san jose police officer who tried to help those victims. >>> a new health problem for secretary of state hillary clinton. she is in a hospital in new york this morning with a blood clot. her doctors discovered the clot yesterday in a follow-up exam following a concussion she suffered earlier this month. her spokesman says the clot is related to the concussion. but he is not saying where the clot is located. she is b
